Pi’erre Bourne - The Life of Pi’erre 5
Like yacht rock or vapor wave, you have to meet the sugar-high ecstaticsm of TLOP5 at its own terms. The energy of pierre is something similar to a youth’s dentist office laughing gas experience: hypnotic, ethereal, and playful. When you first listen to TLOP5, the one thing that nags like a sore tooth is Pierre’s lyrical depth (or lack thereof). TLOP shows us why usually the most you ever hear from Pierre is “Yo Pierre You Wanna Come Out Here.” But believe me, there is a Rosetta Stone of Pierre: listen to TLOP5 a few times and you will understand lines like
“ I’m on the web , she wanna link,
you stabbed me in the back like Zelda & Link”
Or
“Baby girl you’re smart yeah a acadmey
She want a sugar daddy, no cavity”
as clear as when your Dad says “I’m disappointed in you son.”
Of course the star of TLOP5 is the catchy, 808-backed earworm beats for which Pierre is famous. The entire 5-album run of TLOP showcases Pierre’s blissed-out beats, but TLOP5 feels particularly cohesive. It features a ton of interesting transitions, which makes it feel more like a single hour long song with 15 beat switches. The bumping, melodic beats played back to back to back say more than any Pierre verse could attempt. The message of the album is to take it easy, enjoy the ride, and hey doc can you pump a little more morphine in me while I nod off to Sossboy 2 please.
